Complementary colors are colors that are opposite each other on the colorwheel. Complementary colors intensify each other. 

The yarn for my current NORO project starts with complementary  colors...and creatively expands the colorway.

Another Silk Garden
Complementary colors
mixed with grays and black.
Plus a touch of yellow green.
NORO has a knack
for color combinations
that say, "Hey, look at me!"
Still seeding with Silk Garden...
my path to ecstasy.
