Homeschooling - Week # I’m not really sure by Deb Bump
This adventure of homeschooling and quarantine continues, and while the discussions of reopening have begun, it seems as if we still have a ways to go. Our kids continue to do pretty well during this challenging time, although as I write this entry, I hear sounds of wrestling coming from the other room. Let’s call that PE class for the day.
While many states have closed school for the remainder of the school year, the future for students in New York remains uncertain. One thing that is certain is the students will never forget this year, whether they are in kindergarten or seniors in high school. These months will forever hold unprecedented memories for them, their families and this community. I have been reminiscing on my senior year of high school (which was more years ago than I care to admit, but still feels recent) and am thankful that I still have close friends from that time in my life. Recently, we’ve had fun exchanging old pictures and laughs in these past few weeks to help pass the time.
Our son is also scheduled to have a big graduation this year - kindergarten! I am not sure when the tradition of kindergarten graduation started, but it is something celebrated in the schools these days. The ceremony is cute and it is interesting to hear what some of the students want to be when they grow up (teacher, policeman, robot?), but if skipping ceremonies like these is what is best for the overall health of the community to return us to some sort of normalcy, that is what needs to be done.
I still cannot say enough about the efforts of all of the teachers during this difficult time. They are reading stories, playing games and doing lessons online, and it is something our kids look forward to each day. It is evident how much they care about their students, and their hard work is greatly appreciated.
I also appreciate your patience as we postpone and reschedule events for GVCA; we are all hoping to get back to our regular routine soon, realizing that it will take some time. Take care of yourself and each other, and keep sharing your current projects with us!
